The most southwestern neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, Long Branch was the original land tract of British Loyalist Colonel Sam Smith, one of the first settlers in the former Etobicoke Township. The Long Branch Aerodrome (located just west of the current neighbourhood's boundary) was famed as Canada's first flight training institution, though the land has since been redeveloped. Today, while still primarily composed of single-family homes, small condominiums and larger commercial buildings are beginning to crop up on the busy Lakeshore strip, as growth in Toronto continues its western spread. The Long Branch Loop is a major transit hub, connecting TTC streetcar and bus lines with the MiWay bus system, making this neighbourhood an ideal midpoint for those working in either Mississauga or Toronto.
