New Toronto began as a series of farming communities west of Toronto, before a group of industrialists began to develop it in 1890. It remained an industrial district for the most part until the late 1980s, when many local manufacturers shut down or left the area. This neighbourhood is now in a period of transition and gentrification, as several vacant sections of land are redeveloped into residential space. New Toronto is also home to the Lakeshore Campus of Humber College, one of the most well-respected public polytechnic colleges in the GTA.
